Real Wood Shutters Hand Crafted in Los Angeles
Shutters are timeless. And being truly hand crafted in made in California only adds to their appeal. In Southern California, specifically the coastal homes of LA and Orange County, shutters have been a staple for the past century, and are not going away any time soon. Whether you live in an early century beach bungalow, or a sleek and modern new build on the Balboa Peninsula, shutters can work for you.
Things we like about shutters in Southern California.
A great “front of the home” window covering option. When considering what type of window covering makes sense for the the street facing windows front of your home, there are a few things to keep in mind. Though function and privacy are paramount, when it comes to the front of your house, what you see from the outside matters a lot. Though we love roman shades for bedrooms and interior rooms on homes, when it comes to front windows, we tend to avoid them because the beautiful fabric you fell in love with is not visible from the backside, where instead you see a blank liner and cord controls.
Shutters on the other hand have a clean classic look no matter which side you view them from.
View-through, privacy, and light control. While other window covering options like draperies and roller shades are “all or nothing,” as in, they are open or closed, shutters can be tilted to allow view through and light control. Or depending on window size and shutter configuration, you can have hinging shutters that are fully retractable for completely unobstructed views. This gives you full control of privacy and light throughout the day.
Clearview (hidden tilt) vs. traditional shutters. A traditional shutter, and what you probably most immediately think of when picturing a shutter in your mind’s eye, operates the louvers (horizontal slats) with a tilt bar or rod, the thin wooden piece used to open or close the louvres in unison. A contemporary take on this, and what we do quite often in new coastal homes in Los Angeles and Orange County are “clearview” shutters, which open and close without the obstruction of a center tilt bar. They have a much more modern look and the added bonus of better view through. Though not superior per se, in certain circumstances they make more sense, particularly from a design perspective.
Adding value to your home. Let’s face it, curb appeal is nice, but in the Southern California housing market, it’s hard to justify spending money on your home that is not truly seen as an “investment.” Compared to other window treatments that will wear out and break down over time, for example wood blinds, shutters are a durable, long lasting option that many buyers view as high quality and not needing to be replaced.
Truly Hand Crafted, Custom Real Wood (bass wood) Shutters
All Field Work Design Craft shutters are made right here, in Southern California (just outside of downtown LA, to be precise). Like all our products, we design, measure, and install our shutters, so you don’t have to do a thing except make a phone call or send an email, and let us do the work.
Bass Wood. Bass wood is the preferred wood of choice for any shutter of quality. It has a perfect balance of durability, consistency, being easy to work with, and taking well to both painting and staining. Though we don’t struggle with the impacts of humidity in LA and the OC like other parts of the country, if you do live particularly close to the ocean, like many of the homes we work on, moisture resistance is important. Bass wood has great moisture resistance, even if you are in a beach front / adjacent property.
Versatility. We make shutters for just about any window, in any configuration. whether you need a flush, inside mount application, an outside mount with moulding, or perhaps even a Bermuda shutter for an exterior (or interior) application, we have got you covered. With various louvre sizes, from small and narrow 2 1/2 inch to a chunky and modern 4 1/2 inch, if you can think it, we can build and install it.
