Motorized Roller Shades in Laguna Beach
Motorized roller shades are one of the more popular window treatment choices for many homes in Orange County, especially with large south and west facing windows that provide excellent views, but struggle with a high solar load.
This modern home presented plenty of unique challenges when it came to window treatments…a situation we at Field Work welcome with open arms.
This homeowner in Laguna Beach struggled with a good solution for a large, open space in their modern home with sweeping ocean views in the hills above PCH in south Laguna Beach. The key challenge was an over 12 foot tall, angle-top window with essentially floor to ceiling glass. I’ve written about angle-top, or trapezoid shaped, windows in the past and some of the solutions we offer. In this case, the challenge was not just the odd shape of the window, but also the scale, and making sure a window covering solution did not negatively impact the key feature of this room, 180 degree Pacific Ocean views.
We considered a few solutions, including bottom up roller shades, and a few drapery configurations, and ultimately decided based on the aesthetic of the home and the owners’ personal preference for a clean look, motorized roller shades outside mounted above the trapezoid window would be the best case scenario taking all factors into consideration. Effectively, we removed the odd shape of the window from the equation.
We did not lose sight of the fact that we would be mounting a horizontal window treatment above a sloped window, but reasoned that given all the angles in the home already, this was an aesthetic compromise we were willing to accept. Rather than going with a roller shade concealed in a fascia or cornice, we decided that the simple, low profile open roller look fit the aesthetic of the home and would have the least imposing impact on the overall room, particularly when rolled up in the open position. The modern, clean, simple steel brackets in a warm white were perfect given the color of the room.
While nearly any window treatment would have had a positive impact on the heat that is generated in this home with so much sunlight coming through the tall glass windows, the solar screens used for these roller shades were particularly effective. Their main purpose is to reduce heat transmission and the negative impacts of UV light on finishes, furniture, and art while preserving view-through. Once installed, the effect of standing in the room and improved comfort were immediate and the ocean views were still in tact.
Not to be overlooked or overshadowed by the large trapezoid shaped window was an equally challenging octogonal shaped dining nook. Here, a series of rollers were used in concert to neatly wrap the space when in the down position, but effectively disappear when rolled up. Perfect fit and a clean installation was critical.
