Living and working in the Belmont Heights area of Long Beach, we encounter a lot of historical homes that are 100+ years old. Though many have been modified over the years, quite a few still maintain much of their original features and charm. While this is great for the character of a neighborhood, it does not always lead to the most practical situation when designing and installing window treatments. Things like mounting depth can be severely limited, and finding a style that works with the original essence of the home, the owner’s vibe, and feels right in a sort of timeless-yet-contemporary way are all a balance.
In this mostly-original yet updated craftsman there were a few objectives. First and foremost, eliminate the white, light filtering cellular shades that were far past their prime. But also choose something with simple aesthetic and functionality, felt right in immediate proximity to the beach, did not overwhelm the any particular space (there isn’t much to begin with), and has a balance of both transparency to “open things up” and privacy.

Challenges
The two primary challenges in this case were inherent to the home itself. First, the amount of windows in a relatively small space. We wanted a pattern and style that would not overwhelm the space and close it down, but also not get washed out and lost in the white walls. The second main challenge was balancing style and functionality with real world considerations for how the window treatment would seamlessly physically attach to the window itself. By customizing the headrail, controls, and being very specific in our measuring and mounting position, we achieved a seamless integration into the open concept floor plan that connects the living, dining, and kitchen.
